Current work is focused on three interconnected areas: asylum accommodation transition, community sponsorship housing, and the wider housing systems that underpin protection outcomes.

Asylum Accommodation Transition

The challenge

The UK is approaching a major decision point ahead of the next asylum accommodation procurement cycle. While there is broad agreement that reliance on hotels should reduce over time, significant questions remain about housing supply, implementation, commissioning and system design.

Our response

Housing for Protection is currently undertaking a feasibility study exploring what forms of reform may be possible, what housing implications they carry, and what implementation infrastructure would be required to move from pilots and local initiatives towards wider system adoption.

Current areas of focus include:

• stakeholder interviews and evidence gathering

• international learning and comparative practice

• housing pathway analysis

• procurement and commissioning implications

• reform feasibility and implementation requirements

Community Sponsorship Housing

The challenge

Community sponsorship has demonstrated strong outcomes, but housing remains one of the primary constraints on future growth. While sponsorship has created effective pathways for welcome and integration, long-term growth will depend on stronger and more diverse housing options.

Our response

Housing for Protection is supporting work to strengthen the housing foundations of the future Community Sponsorship scheme, including housing standards, pathway development and exploration of new housing supply routes capable of supporting long-term growth.

• housing standards and operational requirements

• mapping existing housing pathways

• development of future housing pathway options

• engagement with housing associations and sector partners

Protection Housing Systems

The challenge

Asylum accommodation, refugee resettlement, community sponsorship and temporary accommodation are often designed and governed separately despite operating within the same housing market and relying on many of the same institutions, resources and communities.

Our response

Housing for Protection is exploring how greater alignment across these systems could create more durable, scalable and effective protection outcomes. This work focuses on the housing infrastructure, partnerships and system conditions required to support protection pathways over the long term.

• housing pathway integration

• implementation and adoption challenges

• opportunities for greater system coherence
